Organic bread has been a staple food for humans from the very beginning. Well, from the time we learned to farm and bake at least.
Along with the industrial revelation came mass produced foods. When you mass produce anything you want to get as much product made in as short a time as possible.
Food production is a very lucrative business and so, with the introduction of competition to the food industry food producers invented new ways to preserve the foods for as long as possible. If a producers food stays fresh longer than the competition’s food it is only logical that consumers will pick that product over the other.
Unfortunately the steps taken in mass production of food is not really in our best interest. Chemicals that would not normally be part of our diet are added to the food to preserve them. Today we know that some of those chemicals are very harmful to us over the long term.
A few years back the Organic food revolution broke out. People no longer trusted the food producers and their chemicals. We as consumers started looking for foods that were grown without nasty pesticides that harmed us and the environment. People also wanted to revert back to having processed foods with less harmful or no chemicals in them.
Today we have a robust market for organic foods but as we learned more about our dietary needs we also needed specialty foods to cater to people who needed foods that did not contain certain natural foods either. There is a growing demand for Gluten-free foods and food that contain no nuts because many people simply can not have those products in their diet for health reasons.
Manna Organic Bread Review
Manna Organics sent us 4 loaves of bread to try.
The first bread we tried was the Sprouted Bread Banana Walnut Hemp
The Banana Walnut Hemp loaf is Organic Certified and Kosher Certified.
When we first opened the bag to get to the bread the first thing that I noticed was the weight of the bread. The bread was definitely heavier than any normal bread and the reason for this is that the loaf is very densely packed with moist grains. The loaf was the same consistency of fruit cake, moist and almost sticky to the touch. The smell that came from the bread as I cut slices from it has heavenly.
We decided that we would eat each of the four breads with dinner over the week so that we did not just end up pigging out on the breads in one day. This turned out to be a problem but I will get into that later. The Banana Walnut Hemp organic bread was a great accompaniment to our dinner and we all enjoyed it.
The second organic bread we tried was the Sprouted Bread – Fruit and Nut
This organic bread was also a great way to introduce grain to our meal so, we again had it with dinner. The bread was moist and heavy just like the one before and this time it had the consistency of a muffin. Very tasty indeed.
When it came to day three of blissful breads we ran into a problem. When we got the bread we opened all the loafs to get a better idea of which breads we wanted to try first. Unfortunately the last two breads were not closed properly and now they were dry.
No problem, my mother taught me long ago to save money by toasting slightly dry bread and here the organic bread Gluten Free Cinnamon Raisin came back to being snack worthy. Toasted and slightly buttered it was pretty good. The cinnamon flavor was more noticeable and the raisins were nice and sweet. Job well done! We saved the day and still had healthy bread to eat.
The last bread was one I personally picked for myself and I should probably have eaten it when I got it because on the fourth day the Bavarian Rye Sourdough was not doing well at all. I could kick myself for not taking better care of this bread. What a shame because the bread had everything in it that I loved. Ingredients include; whole rye flour and coriander seeds.
Overall I would say we were happy with the breads but we did horse it up by not preserving the breads better.
When you take into consideration that the organic breads are baked and shipped (as soon as possible) and that they don’t have preservatives in them then you will realize that they don’t have the same shelf life as say Wonder Bread. Then again, that is the point. I wanted to try a organic bread that was not laced with preservatives and I paid the price for not thinking it over.
